Opening Chapter
Shaikhul-Islām Abū ʿUthmān Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAbdur-Rahmān as-Sābūnī (Allah’s mercy be upon him) said: “I say—and success is granted by Allāh—that indeed, the People of Hadīth, those who cling firmly to the Book and the Sunnah, may Allāh preserve those living among them and shower mercy upon those who have passed away, bear witness to the absolute Oneness of Allāh, and to the Messengership and Prophethood of His Messenger (ﷺ).
They know their Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, by His Attributes which His Revelation and His Book have spoken of, or those to which His Messenger (ﷺ) bore witness, in accordance with what has been reported in the authentic narrations and transmitted from him by trustworthy and reliable narrators. They affirm for Him, Glorified and Exalted is He, those Attributes which He affirmed for Himself in His Book and upon the tongue of His Messenger (ﷺ).
They do not hold that His Attributes resemble the attributes of His creation. Rather, they say: Indeed, He created Ādam with His Hand, just as He, Glorified is He, explicitly stated in His saying to Iblīs:
قَالَ يَا إِبْلِيسُ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَنْ تَسْجُدَ لِمَا خَلَقْتُ بِيَدَيَّ
“Allāh said: ‘O Iblīs! What prevented you from prostrating to one whom I created with My Two Hands?’”
They do not divert the speech from its proper place by interpreting the two Hands to mean the two favours or the two powers—as the Muʿtazilah and the Jahmiyyah have done, may Allāh destroy them. Nor do they ask how the two Hands are, nor do they liken them to the hands of the creation, as the Mushabbihah have done, may Allāh forsake them.”
