Sufyān ath-Thawrī (rahimahullāh, d. 161H) said:
“Innovation is more beloved to Iblīs than sin, because sin is repented from, whereas innovation is not repented from.”
The Hadīth where the Prophet (salallāhu ʿalaihi wasallam) said:
“Indeed, Allāh withholds or screens the repentance from every person of innovation.” (Reported by aṭ-Tabarānī in al-Awsat (no. 4214; 5/113); al-Bayhaqī in Shuʿab al-Imān (5/449, no. 7238); Ibn ʿAdiyy in al-Kāmil fid-Duʿafā (6/257); and graded sahīh by al-Albānī in as-Silsilatus-Sahīhah (no. 1620) with a slightly different wording)
Shaikhul-Islām Muhammad Ibn Abdul-Wahhāb (rahimahullāh) said that Allah, the Most High, said: This has been reported from the hadīth of Anas (radiyallāhu ʿanhu). Ibn Waddāh mentioned from Ayyūb who said:
“There was a man among us who held an opinion, then he abandoned it. So, I went to Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn and said: ‘Are you aware that so-and-so has abandoned his opinion?’ He replied: ‘Look to what he turns to next. Indeed, the latter part of the ḥadīth is more severe upon them than its beginning:
