Hadeeth no 5. The Jamāʿah is One, and it is the Saved Sect, those who Follow the Prophet (salallāhu ʿalaihi wasallam) and His Companions (Allah be pleased with them)
ʿAwf Ibn Mālik (radiyallāhu ʿanhu) narrated that Allah’s Messenger (salallāhu ʿalaihi wasallam) said:
افْتَرَقَتِ الْيَهُودُ عَلَى إِحْدَى وَسَبْعِينَ فِرْقَةً فَوَاحِدَةٌ فِي الْجَنَّةِ وَسَبْعُونَ فِي النَّارِ وَافْتَرَقَتِ النَّصَارَى عَلَى ثِنْتَيْنِ وَسَبْعِينَ فِرْقَةً فَإِحْدَى وَسَبْعُونَ فِي النَّارِ وَوَاحِدَةٌ فِي الْجَنَّةِ وَالَّذِي نَفْسُ مُحَمَّدٍ بِيَدِهِ لَتَفْتَرِقَنَّ أُمَّتِي عَلَى ثَلاَثٍ وَسَبْعِينَ فِرْقَةً فَوَاحِدَةٌ فِي الْجَنَّةِ وَثِنْتَانِ وَسَبْعُونَ فِي النَّارِ قِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَنْ هُمْ قَالَ الْجَمَاعَةُ
“The Jews split into seventy-one sects, one will be in Paradise and seventy in Hell. The Christians split into seventy-two sects, seventy-one will be in Hell and one in Paradise. I swear by the One in whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad, my nation will split into seventy-three sects, one will be in Paradise and seventy-two in Hell.” It was said: “O Messenger of Allah, who are they?” He said: “The Jamāʿah.” Ibn Mājah, no. 3992, graded saheeh by Imām Al-Albānī.
In the narration of ʿAbdullāh Ibn ʿAmr (radiyallāhu ʿanahumā), the Prophet (salallāhu ʿalaihi wasallam) replied:
مَا أَنَا عَلَيْهِ وَأَصْحَابِي
“That which I am upon and my Companions.” At-Tirmidhī, no. 2641, graded hasan by Imām Al-Albānī.
In another narration, he (salallāhu ʿalaihi wasallam) said:
السَّوادَ الأعظمَ
“[They are] the Main Body.” Ibn Abī ʿĀsim in As-Sunnah, no. 68.
