Part 20: Belief in the River of Life and the “Jahannamiyyoon” – Those Punished and then Placed in Paradise.
Imām Ahmad bin Hanbal (rahimahullah) continued his discussion of the intercession (ash-shafāʿah), and of those who will be brought out of the Hellfire after being burned and reduced to charcoal saying. So Imam Ahmad said:
والإيمان بشفاعة النبي صلى الله عليه و سلم, وبقوم يخرجون من النار بعد ما احترقوا وصاروا فحما
فيؤمر بهم إلى نهر على باب الجنة كما جاء في الأثر, كيف شاء الله, وكما شاء, إنما هو الإيمان به, والتصديق به.
“And to have faith in the Intercession of the Prophet (salallāhu ‘alaihi wasallam) and that some people will be brought out of the Fire after they have been burnt and reduced to charcoal.
So it will be commanded for those who have been burned to be placed in a river by the gate of Jannah as occurs in the narrations however Allah wills and as He wills. Indeed, it is (a must) to have faith in it and to attest to its truthfulness.”
Explanation
This proves that those Muslims who have been punished will die in the Hellfire, but as for other than them, then they will neither die nor will they [truly] live. The Muslims who were punished in the Fire due to their sins will then be placed in the River of Life at the Gate of Paradise, and they will grow just like a seed grows after the flood water recedes.
There is a narration collected by Imām Ahmad, al-Hākim and al-Bayhaqi, which is authentic, that Abu Saʿeed Al-Khudri said that Allah’s Messenger (salallāhu ʿalaihi wasallam) said:
“The people of Hellfire will remain there, never dying and never living. There will also be people who will enter Hell because of their sins, and they will die therein. They will turn into charcoal and ashes – and permission will be granted for intercession to be made – and they will be brought out of the Hellfire in groups, and spread over the sides of the rivers of Paradise. It will be said, ‘O People of Paradise! Pour water upon them!’ So they will grow like seeds in the silt left by a flood.”
In a narration reported by Imām Muslim, Jābir bin ‘Abdillah (radiyallāhu ʿanhumā) said that the Prophet (salallāhu ʿalaihi wasallam) said: “Some people will be brought out of the Fire, having been burnt all over except for their faces, and they will enter Paradise.”
In another narration collected by Bukhāri and Muslim, ʿImrān bin Hussayn (radiyallāhu ‘anhu) said that Allah’s Messenger (salallāhu ʿalaihi wasallam) said: “Some people will be brought out of Hell through the intercession of Muhammad and then they will enter Paradise. They will be known as Al-Jahannamiyoon.” Meaning: those who used to be people of Jahannam.
In another narration collected by Imām Muslim, Jābir bin ʿAbdillāh (radiyallāhu ʿanhumā) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (salallāhu ‘alaihi wasallam) said: “Intercession will be permitted (on the Day of Resurrection) and they will intercede until whoever said Lā ilaha illallāh (none has the right to be worshipped except Allah) – and who had even a barley grain’s worth of goodness in his heart will be brought out of the Fire – and they will be made stand in the courtyard of Paradise. The people of Paradise will start to pour water over them until they begin to grow like seeds left in silt after a flood. All traces of the Fire will disappear from them and the last of them will keep asking Allah until he is given by his Lord the equivalent of this world and ten times more (in reward) – and Allah is able to grant all of that!”
This is our belief concerning the grave, the questioning in the grave, the Intercession and the believers who will be removed from the Hellfire and entered into Paradise. These beliefs of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamāʿah are denied by the Khawārij and the Mu’tazilah. They falsely claim that those who commit major sins have left the fold of Islām, and therefore they will never be removed from the Fire. The above narrations prove that their belief is false, and that Allah will show mercy to the people of Islām, even along with their major sins.
