Shaikhul-Islām Muhammad Ibn Abdul-Wahhāb (rahimahullāh) said that Allah, the Most High, said:
وَمَن يَبْتَغِ غَيْرَ ٱلْإِسْلَـٰمِ دِينًا فَلَن يُقْبَلَ مِنْهُ وَهُوَ فِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ مِنَ ٱلْخَـٰسِرِينَ ٨٥
“And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter, he will be one of the losers.”
Ibn Bāz said: The meaning of this chapter is that it is obligatory upon every one of the Ummah to follow the teachings and the religion of Islam. There is no salvation nor happiness for the people except through Islam.
So, when a person dies upon other than Islam as a non-Muslim, even if he has good deeds or other acts of obedience the size of mountains, they are nullified [because he rejected Islam]:
وَقَدِمْنَآ إِلَىٰ مَا عَمِلُوا مِنْ عَمَلٍۢ فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُ هَبَآءً مَّنثُورًا ٢٣
“And We shall turn to whatever deeds they (the disbelievers) did, and We shall make such deeds as scattered floating particles of dust.”
Ibn al-Mājishoon said that he heard Imām Mālik Ibn Anas (d. 170 AH) say: “Whoever introduces into Islam an innovation, seeing it to be something good, has claimed that Muhammad betrayed the Message (Risālah) because Allah said:
ٱلْيَوْمَ أَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ دِينَكُمْ
‘This day I have perfected for you your Religion.’ So whatever on that day was not Religion, cannot today be Religion.’”
