The Muftī of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Al-ʿAllāmah, Sālih al-Fawzān (may Allāh preserve him), warns and advises:
“Unfortunately, most people today have no concern except for idle talk and gossip, backbiting and tale-carrying, disparaging the people, declaring them sinful, making tabdīʿ of them and takfīr without right.
They have no occupation except this. I single out for mention the students of knowledge—for indeed, from them are those who have now abandoned seeking knowledge, and their concern has become:
‘What do you say about so-and-so?’
‘Do you approve of his speech?’
‘You are followers of so-and-so, and we are followers of so-and-so.’
O my brothers, this is not befitting for the Muslim—especially the student of knowledge. Rather, it is obligatory upon him to be mindful of Allah concerning his knowledge, and that he safeguards his tongue, and does not go along with the people.
If he hears the speech of an ignorant person, he turns away from it and does not pay attention to it. And if you desire salvation for yourselves, then occupy yourselves with knowledge and guard your tongues. For indeed, this is a time of fitan (tribulations), especially after doubts have become widespread.
Indeed, the tribulations may come in the name of religion, in the name of knowledge, and in the name of the scholars. So beware of that and occupy yourselves with seeking knowledge and turning towards obedience to Allah.
And beware of those who fish in murky waters—because they extract speech from you and spread it amongst the people—then your speech is carried upon other than its intended meaning, and the speaker is made to say that which he did not say. Especially since there are devices that record your speech while you are unaware—for he conceals it while accompanying the one whom he wishes to cause to slip.”

قال الشيخ صالح الفوزان في كتابه شرح كتاب الكبائر للشيخ محمد بن عبد الوهاب (أبواب كبائر اللسان / باب التحذير من شرِّ اللسان
وللأسف أكثرُ الناس اليوم ليس لهم هَمٌّ إلا القيل والقيل والغيبة والنميمة والتجريح بالناس والتفسيق والتبديع والتكفير بغير حق ليس لهم شُغل إلا هذا وأخُصُّ بذلك طلبة العلم فمنهم من ترك طلب العلم الآن ! وصار همُّهُ : ماذا تقول في فلان وهل يعجبك كلامه أنتم أتباعُ فلان ونحن أتباعُ فلان . يا إخوان : لا ينبغي هذا للمسلم ولاسيّما طالب العلم بل الأصل فيه أن يُراقب الله في عِلمِهِ ويحفظ لسانه ولا يتجارى مع الناس وإذا سَمِعَ كلامُ جاهلٍ أعرض عنه ولم يُلْقِ له بالاً وإذا كنتم تريدون النجاة لأنفسكم : اشتغلوا بالعلم واحفظوا ألسنتكم فالزمان زمانُ فتنةٍ وخصوصاً بعد أن كثُرت الشبهات فقد تأتي الفتن باسم الدين وباسم العلم والعلماء احذروا من هذا واشتغلوا بطلب العلم والإقبال على طاعة الله واحذروا من أولئك الذين يصطادون في الماء العكر لأنهم يستخرجون الكلامَ منكم وينشرونه في الناس فيُحمل الكلام على غير محمله ويُقوَّل القائل ما لم يقل لا سيّما هناك أدوات تسجيل تُسجل كلامَك وأنت لا تدري لأنه يُخفيه بصحبة من يُريد أن يُوقعك
