Al-ʿAllāmah Muqbil bin Hādī al-Wādiʿī (died 1422H) would advise his students to choose a righteous woman to marry because if she is not righteous, she may lead him astray. Then he mentioned a few stories concerning that―from them is that which is found in Siyar Aʿlām an-Nubalā’ (4/214 no. 86) in the biography of ʿImrān bin Ḥiṭṭān, “Salamah bin ʿAlqamah narrated from Ibn Sīrīn who said, ‘ʿImrān bin Ḥiṭṭān married a Khārijī woman, and said, ‘I will bring her back [to the Sunnah].’ Ibn Sīrīn said, ‘Instead, she took him to her beliefs.’ Al-Madā’inī said, ‘She was beautiful but he was ugly. She surprised him one day by saying, ‘You and I are in Paradise because you were bestowed a gift and were grateful while I was afflicted [with marrying you] and was patient.’” Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Kathīr said in al-Bidāyah wan-Nihāyah regarding the year 84H, “ʿImrān bin Ḥiṭṭān al-Khārijī was from Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamāʿah in the beginning, but he married a woman from the Khawārij who was appealing and very beautiful, so he fell in love with her―and he was ugly. He wanted to bring her to the Sunnah―but she refused, so he switched and joined her, and took on her beliefs.” See Qamʿul-Maʿānid (2/571).
