The Manner of the Prophet’s (salallāhu ʿalaihi wasallam) Bath after Sexual Relations

A ghusl (bath) is required when the sexual organs of the male and female come into contact with each other―or when a man ejaculates, or a woman reaches orgasm and she experiences discharge of fluid (even whilst dreaming), or for a woman when her menses finishes, or when her post-natal bleeding comes to an end.
Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, stated:
وَإِن كُنتُمْ جُنُبًۭا فَٱطَّهَّرُوا۟ ۚ
“And if you are in a state of janābah (impurity after sexual relations), then take a bath (ghusl) to purify yourselves.” (Al-Mā’idah: 6)
Ibn ʿAbbās (radiyallāhu ʿanhumā) narrated from Maymoonah (radiyallāhu ʿanhā), who was his maternal aunt and the wife of the Prophet (salallāhu ʿalaihi wasallam) that she said:
“I placed water near the Messenger of Allah (salallāhu ʿalaihi wasallam) to take a bath (ghusl) due to sexual intercourse. He washed the palms of his hands twice or three times. Then he put his hand into the pot, drew out water, poured it over his private parts and washed them with his left hand. He then struck his hand on the earth and rubbed his hand firmly. Then he performed wuḍū (ablution) as he would for the Prayer. After that, he poured three handfuls of water over his head. Then he washed his whole body after which he moved to one side from where he was, and washed his feet. Then I brought a towel (so that he may dry his body), but he declined it.” (Muslim, no. 317) 1عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَتْنِي خَالَتِي، مَيْمُونَةُ قَالَتْ أَدْنَيْتُ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم غُسْلَهُ مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ فَغَسَلَ كَفَّيْهِ مَرَّتَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ أَدْخَلَ يَدَهُ فِي الإِنَاءِ ثُمَّ أَفْرَغَ بِهِ عَلَى فَرْجِهِ وَغَسَلَهُ بِشِمَالِهِ ثُمَّ ضَرَبَ بِشِمَالِهِ الأَرْضَ فَدَلَكَهَا دَلْكًا شَدِيدًا ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ وُضُوءَهُ لِلصَّلاَةِ ثُمَّ أَفْرَغَ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ ثَلاَثَ حَفَنَاتٍ مِلْءَ كَفِّهِ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ سَائِرَ جَسَدِهِ ثُمَّ تَنَحَّى عَنْ مَقَامِهِ ذَلِكَ فَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُهُ بِالْمِنْدِيلِ فَرَدَّهُ
ʿA’ishah (radiyallāhu ʿanhā) narrated: “When Allah’s Messenger (salallāhu ʿalaihi wasallam) bathed after sexual intercourse, he would begin by washing his hands. Then he poured water with his right hand onto his left and washed his private parts. Then he performed wudū (ablution) as he would for the Prayer. He then took some water and put his fingers through the roots of his hair―and when he saw that was done, he poured three handfuls on his head, and then he poured water over his body and then he washed his feet.” (Muslim, no. 316) 2انَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم إِذَا اغْتَسَلَ مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ يَبْدَأُ فَيَغْسِلُ يَدَيْهِ ثُمَّ يُفْرِغُ بِيَمِينِهِ عَلَى شِمَالِهِ فَيَغْسِلُ فَرْجَهُ ثُمَّ يَتَوَضَّأُ وُضُوءَهُ لِلصَّلاَةِ ثُمَّ يَأْخُذُ الْمَاءَ فَيُدْخِلُ أَصَابِعَهُ فِي أُصُولِ الشَّعْرِ حَتَّى إِذَا رَأَى أَنْ قَدِ اسْتَبْرَأَ حَفَنَ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ ثَلاَثَ حَفَنَاتٍ ثُمَّ أَفَاضَ عَلَى سَائِرِ جَسَدِهِ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ
In the narration of An-Nasā’ī (no. 243) she (radiyallāhu ʿanhā) said: “When the Messenger of Allah (salallāhu ʿalaihi wasallam) performed ghusl from janābah, the vessel of water would be placed before him. He would pour water over his hands before putting them into the vessel, until he had washed his hands. Then he would put his right hand in the vessel and draw out the water, and pour it and wash his private parts with his left hand. When he had finished, he would pour water with his right hand over his left hand and wash them both. Then he would rinse his mouth and nose three times, then he would pour water filling both of his hands over his head three times, then he would pour water over his body.” 3أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَ إِذَا اغْتَسَلَ مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ وُضِعَ لَهُ الإِنَاءُ فَيَصُبُّ عَلَى يَدَيْهِ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُدْخِلَهُمَا الإِنَاءَ حَتَّى إِذَا غَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ أَدْخَلَ يَدَهُ الْيُمْنَى فِي الإِنَاءِ ثُمَّ صَبَّ بِالْيُمْنَى وَغَسَلَ فَرْجَهُ بِالْيُسْرَى حَتَّى إِذَا فَرَغَ صَبَّ بِالْيُمْنَى عَلَى الْيُسْرَى فَغَسَلَهُمَا ثُمَّ تَمَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ يَصُبُّ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ مِلْءَ كَفَّيْهِ ثَلاَثَ مَرَّاتٍ ثُمَّ يُفِيضُ عَلَى جَسَدِهِ
ʿA’ishah (radiyallāhu ʿanhā) narrated: “Whenever the Prophet (salallāhu ʿalaihi wasallam) took a bath (ghusl) due to janābah, he started by washing his hands, and then performed wuḍū (ablution) like he would for the prayer. Then he would put his fingers in the water and push them through the roots of his hair―then he poured three handfuls of water over his head, and then poured water over his whole body.” (Al-Bukhārī, no. 248) 4عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَ إِذَا اغْتَسَلَ مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ بَدَأَ فَغَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ، ثُمَّ يَتَوَضَّأُ كَمَا يَتَوَضَّأُ لِلصَّلاَةِ، ثُمَّ يُدْخِلُ أَصَابِعَهُ فِي الْمَاءِ، فَيُخَلِّلُ بِهَا أُصُولَ شَعَرِهِ ثُمَّ يَصُبُّ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ ثَلاَثَ غُرَفٍ بِيَدَيْهِ، ثُمَّ يُفِيضُ الْمَاءَ عَلَى جِلْدِهِ كُلِّهِ
Maymoonah (radiyallāhu ʿanhā) said: “Allah’s Messenger (salallāhu ʿalaihi wasallam) performed ablution (wuḍū) like that for the Prayer but he did not wash his feet. He washed off the discharge from his private parts, and then poured water over his body. He withdrew his feet from the place where he took the bath, and then washed them. This was his manner of bathing due to janābah.” (Al-Bukhārī, no. 249) 5عَنْ مَيْمُونَةَ، زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَتْ تَوَضَّأَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم وُضُوءَهُ لِلصَّلاَةِ غَيْرَ رِجْلَيْهِ، وَغَسَلَ فَرْجَهُ، وَمَا أَصَابَهُ مِنَ الأَذَى، ثُمَّ أَفَاضَ عَلَيْهِ الْمَاءَ، ثُمَّ نَحَّى رِجْلَيْهِ فَغَسَلَهُمَا، هَذِهِ غُسْلُهُ مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ
Abu Jaʿfar narrated: I and my father were with Jābir Ibn ʿAbdillāh and some people asked him about the ghusl (bath). He said: “Four joined handfuls (a Sāʿ amounting to 2.75 litres) of water will be sufficient for you.” A man said: “That is not enough for me.” Jābir (radiyallāhu ʿanhu) said: “That amount was sufficient for the one who had more hair than you, and he was better than you,” meaning the Prophet (salallāhu ʿalaihi wasallam). Then Jābir put on his garment and led them in Prayer. (Al-Bukhāri, no. 252) 6عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ، أَنَّهُ كَانَ عِنْدَ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ هُوَ وَأَبُوهُ، وَعِنْدَهُ قَوْمٌ فَسَأَلُوهُ عَنِ الْغُسْلِ،. فَقَالَ يَكْفِيكَ صَاعٌ. فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مَا يَكْفِينِي. فَقَالَ جَابِرٌ كَانَ يَكْفِي مَنْ هُوَ أَوْفَى مِنْكَ شَعَرًا، وَخَيْرٌ مِنْكَ، ثُمَّ أَمَّنَا فِي ثَوْبٍ
Jubayr Ibn Mutʿim (radiyallāhu ʿanhu) said: The people disputed in the presence of the Allāh’s Messenger (salallāhu ʿalaihi wasallam) about ghusl from janābah. So Allāh’s Messenger (salallāhu ʿalaihi wasallam) said: “As for me, I pour three handfuls of water over my head.” (Ibn Mājah, no. 575, Abu Dawood, no. 239, sahīh) 7عَنْ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ مُطْعِمٍ، قَالَ تَمَارَوْا فِي الْغُسْلِ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقَالَ بَعْضُ الْقَوْمِ إِنِّي لأَغْسِلُ كَذَا وَكَذَا . فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَمَّا أَنَا فَأُفِيضُ عَلَى رَأْسِي ثَلاَثَ أَكُفٍّ
ʿA’ishah (radiyallāhu ʿanhā) said: “I remember myself and Allāh’s Messenger (salallāhu ʿalaihi wasallam) making ghusl from this vessel―a pot that could hold a Sāʿ of water (2.75 litres) or slightly smaller―we both took water from it and I poured water over my head with my hands three times, without undoing my hair.” (An-Nasā’ī, no. 416) 8عَنْ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ، أَنَّ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُنِي أَغْتَسِلُ أَنَا وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم مِنْ هَذَا فَإِذَا تَوْرٌ مَوْضُوعٌ مِثْلُ الصَّاعِ أَوْ دُونَهُ فَنَشْرَعُ فِيهِ جَمِيعًا فَأُفِيضُ عَلَى رَأْسِي بِيَدَىَّ ثَلاَثَ مَرَّاتٍ وَمَا أَنْقُضُ لِي شَعْرًا
ʿA’ishah, the mother of the believers (radiyallāhu ʿanhā) said: “Allah’s Messenger (salallāhu ʿalaihi wasallam) took a ghusl (from janābah) and then prayed two rakʿahs, then he prayed the Fajr Prayer―and I did not see him perform wudū’ after the ghusl.” (Abu Dawood, no. 250, sahīh) 9عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَغْتَسِلُ وَيُصَلِّي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ وَصَلاَةَ الْغَدَاةِ وَلاَ أُرَاهُ يُحْدِثُ وُضُوءًا بَعْدَ الْغُسْلِ
Making the Ghusl without Performing Wudū’ after Sexual Intercourse (or after Menses) is Permissible.
The ghusl (ritual bath or shower) in which the water reaches the whole body along with one’s intention (in his heart) of removing major impurities (janābah or menses) is correct and sound even without performing wudū’―that is because the wudū’ along with the ghusl is recommended and not a condition or an obligation. Ibn ʿAbdul-Barr (rahimahullāh) cited the ijmāʿ (consensus) of the scholars on this point, due to the saying of Allāh, “And if you are in a state of janābah, then take a bath (ghusl).” (Al-Mā’idah: 6) So Allah did not obligate the wudū’ with along with it. However, the scholars also agree that performing the wudū’ along with the ghusl is recommended and better. So if a person makes ghusl from janābah (or after the menses finishes for a woman), then their ghusl is complete and they can pray after that without making wudū’ as long as they did not nullify their wudū’ during the ghusl by urinating, breaking wind, or touching their private parts (with desire). The ghusl can be made from a small vessel, a bucket, in a shower, in a large body of water (like the sea, river or lake), under a waterfall, a hose pipe, etc. However, ghusl cannot be made while sitting or standing in stagnant water due to the hadeeth of the Messenger (salallāhu ʿalaihi wasallam): “None of you should take a bath in stagnant water when he is sexually impure.” (Muslim) 10لَا يَغْتَسِلُ أَحَدُكُمْ فِي اَلْمَاءِ اَلدَّائِمِ وَهُوَ جُنُبٌ
Shaikh Ibn Bāz (rahimahullāh) explained: “If a person takes a bath (ghusl) from his (or her) state of janābah intending the removal of both states of impurity, major and minor, then he has achieved that. However, if the person intended just the removal of the major state of impurity (i.e., janābah or menses), then the wudū’ would still be required [for Prayer]. Some scholars have stated that even without having the intention for wudū’, the ghusl for janābah (or menses) encompasses the wudū’ regardless―that is because the minor impurity [that requires only wudū’] is removed along with the major impurity [that required the ghusl]. However, what is apparent is that the narrations show that a specific intention is required due to the saying of the Prophet (salallāhu ʿalaihi wasallam), ‘Actions are only by their intentions.’ So the one who intended purification from janābah alone has not entered a state of wudū’ [until he performs it].”
Shaikh Ibn Bāz (rahimahullāh) also stated: “Making wudū’ (ablution) along with the ghusl is best―that he makes wudū’ if he is making ghusl due to janābah (sexual relations), and [likewise] for a woman who is making ghusl after menses―so she makes wudū just as the wudū’ for Prayer. So they make istinjā’ (i.e., wash the private parts), then make wudū’ like the wudū’ for Prayer. Then pour water over the head three times, and put their fingers through their hair, then pour water over the body beginning with the right side, then the left side. This is the Sunnah for ghusl due to janābah or after menses, and for the day of Jumuʿah―i.e., that a person begins with the wudū’, and that is after washing the private parts from urinating, [sexual intercourse,] etc.
However, if a person makes the intention to perform ghusl and wudū’, intending both of them: i.e., the ghusl from janābah and the lesser ritual impurity (that require wudū’), both together―then he pours water over his body just once, covering all of it―then, by doing, so he has fulfilled that. However, doing that which the Prophet (salallāhu ʿalaihi wasallam) did is better and more complete. Regardless, it is a must that a person washes the private parts from that which has exited from it, such as urine, stools, or sexual discharge. Then he pours water over the whole of his body, covering it with water―and if he does that, then that will suffice him if he had the intention of purification from janābah and for wudū’ together. However, if his intention was purification only from janābah, he is removed from the state of janābah. So wudū’, therefore, still remains to be performed, so he will have to perform it for the Prayer.” (Abridged)
Ghusl without Wudū’ for one who is not in Janābah does not make him ready for the Prayer
Shaikh Ibn Bāz clarified: “If the ghusl that is being performed is recommended [non-obligatory], then this is not sufficient as a wudū’ (ablution) for the Prayer. The actual wudū’ must still be performed. That is also applicable if the bath (or shower) was taken to cool himself down.” (Abridged)
If a person is not in janābah and does not require ghusl to remove him from major ritual impurity, but instead has broken his wudū’ through one of the well-known invalidators of wudū’ (such as urinating, breaking wind, defecation, touching the private parts with desire, etc.), then that enters him into a state of minor ritual impurity (al-hadath al-aṣghar)―that requires him to perform the correct wudū’. Taking a bath (ghusl) without the act of wudū’ is not sufficient to make him ready for the Prayer.
When to Wash the Feet
Shaikh Ibn Bāz (rahimahullāh) stated: “If the person begins his ghusl with wudū’ then that is from the Sunnah. So he makes wudū’ even if he leaves off washing his feet―and then he completes his ghusl―that is fine. However, if he ends by washing his feet, that is better. Both methods are reported in the hadeeth. The hadeeth of ʿA’ishah (radiyallāhu ʿanhā) stated that he performed wudū’ completely, and the hadeeth of Maymoonah (radiyallāhu ʿanhā) stated that he left washing his feet until he had finished the ghusl, and then he washed them away from the place of ghusl. So, a person who makes a complete wudū’, then makes ghusl, and then he washes his feet once more [away from the place where he made ghusl] is better… It is understood that he (salallāhu ʿalaihi wasallam) washed his feet in a different place due to what may cling to his feet of soil or dirt―so for that reason he washed his feet away from that area. That is what seems apparent.”
We asked Shaikh ʿUbayd al-Jābirī (rahimahullāh) over 15 years ago regarding the person who makes a ghusl in a bath (or shower) and begins with wudū’. Is it upon him to leave off washing his feet until he removes himself from the tub or shower area? He responded that he does not need to exit from the bathtub or shower because in these times the baths and showers have plugholes that take away the used water used for ghusl from janābah. In the olden days, one had to remove themselves from the wash area because water from the ghusl may have gathered on the floor. And Allāh knows best.

- 7عَنْ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ مُطْعِمٍ، قَالَ تَمَارَوْا فِي الْغُسْلِ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقَالَ بَعْضُ الْقَوْمِ إِنِّي لأَغْسِلُ كَذَا وَكَذَا . فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَمَّا أَنَا فَأُفِيضُ عَلَى رَأْسِي ثَلاَثَ أَكُفٍّ
- 8عَنْ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ، أَنَّ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُنِي أَغْتَسِلُ أَنَا وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم مِنْ هَذَا فَإِذَا تَوْرٌ مَوْضُوعٌ مِثْلُ الصَّاعِ أَوْ دُونَهُ فَنَشْرَعُ فِيهِ جَمِيعًا فَأُفِيضُ عَلَى رَأْسِي بِيَدَىَّ ثَلاَثَ مَرَّاتٍ وَمَا أَنْقُضُ لِي شَعْرًا
- 9عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَغْتَسِلُ وَيُصَلِّي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ وَصَلاَةَ الْغَدَاةِ وَلاَ أُرَاهُ يُحْدِثُ وُضُوءًا بَعْدَ الْغُسْلِ
- 10لَا يَغْتَسِلُ أَحَدُكُمْ فِي اَلْمَاءِ اَلدَّائِمِ وَهُوَ جُنُبٌ
