This is the Jāhiliyyah (Pre-Islamic Ignorance) that Allah saved you from, O women of Islam!

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Death of a husband: Zaynab bint Abī Salamah said, “If a woman’s husband died, she would go into a hut and wear her worst clothes, and she would not put on perfume until one year had passed. Then an animal would be brought: a donkey, a sheep, or a bird, and she would rub her hands over it, and rarely did she rub her hands over anything but it died. Then she would come out and be given a piece of dung which she would throw!” (Al-Bukhārī, no. 5024)

Marriages Pre-Islam: 1) The same as today, wherein a woman would be asked for her hand, her guardian’s permission sought, and a dowry paid. 2) A husband would send his wife to fornicate with another man after her menses; he’d wait till she was found to be pregnant, then have relations with her thinking that the child would have good traits. 3) A woman would have sex with 10 men, and when she got pregnant, she would choose one of them as the father. 4) Women who would fornicate with many men—they were prostitutes who would put flags on their doors. Once pregnant, she’d call all of them, and then whoever the child resembled would be taken as the father. All were abolished except the first type. (See Al-Bukhārī no. 4834)

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي بِنِعْمَتِهِ تَتِمُّ الصَّالِحَاتُ

“All praise is for Allah who, by His blessings, all good things are perfected.”
