Naming the newborn child is the right of the father. What about the mother? Or a scholar?

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

The naming of the child is the right of the father: there is no difference (among the scholars) that the father has the most right to name his child – and the mother has no right to contradict him. And if they do differ, the final decision is for the father. Based on this, the mother should not quarrel or argue over the matter.

However, there should be mutual and open consultation between the parents [in the naming] so that both are pleased and there is friendliness, affection and strong bonds between them.

It is established from a group of the Sahābah (radiyallāhu ʿanhum) that they would present their newborn children to the Prophet (salallāhu ʿalaihi wasallam) and he would name them. This shows that the father should discuss and consult regarding the naming of the baby with a scholar of the Sunnah, from Ahlul-Sunnah who is trusted with his religion and knowledge so that he can guide him to a good name for his child.
