The following is a chapter from Shaikhul-Islaam Abu Ismaa`eel Al-Harawee’s (rahimahullaah, 396 – 481H): “The Book Of Forty Narrations In The Evidences Of Tawheed” This compilation is an amazing series of narrations in the establishment of the Tawheed of Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, especially in the arena of the Names and Attributes that has left the Jahmiyyah and their offspring such as the Ashaa`irah and Maatureedees dumbstruck just as Allaah has said:
وَقُلْ جَاءَ الْحَقُّ وَزَهَقَ الْبَاطِلُ ۚ إِنَّ الْبَاطِلَ كَانَ زَهُوقًا
“And say: ‘The Truth has come and falsehood has been vanquished. Surely! Falsehood is ever bound to be wiped out.’” (Al-Israa 17:81)
Chapter (6): Making Clear the fact that Allaah is Living
Abu Ismaa`eel Al-Harawee (481H) with his chain of narration to A`raj from Abu Hurairah (radiyallaahu `anhu) that Allaah’s Messenger (salallaahu `alaihi wassallam) said:
“Indeed for Allaah there are ninety nine names: one hundred minus one. And He is One (Witr) and He loves the odd number. Whoever memorises, understanding and acts upon what these names entail will enter Paradise.” He then enumerated the names and amongst them was Al-Hayy (The Ever-Living)
(Reported by Al-Bukhaaree, 6410; Muslim, 4/2062, 2063; Ibn Maajah, 3860, 3861 – see the attached scan for the Arabic text and complete referencing by Shaikh `Alee Naasir Al-Faqeehee, hafidhahullaah)
Chapter (7): Making clear the proof that He, the Mighty and Majestic, does not sleep
Abu Ismaa`eel Al-Harawee (481H) with his chain of narration to Abu Ubaidah from Abu Moosaa (radiyallaahu `anhu) who said:
That Allaah’s Messenger (salallaahu `alaihi wassallam) stood up amongst us and stated four matters:
“That Allaah, the Most High, does not sleep and it does not befit [His Majesty] that He should sleep. He raises the Scale and lowers it. The deeds of the night are raised up to Him before the day; and the deeds of the day are raised up to Him before the night. His veil (hijaab) is fire, and were He to uncover it the splendour/glory of his Face would burn all that it reaches.”
(Reported by Muslim 1/161: 293; Ibn Maajah 195, 196; Ahmad 4/395, 104, 405 – see the attached scan for the Arabic text and complete referencing by Shaikh `Alee Naasir Al-Faqeehee, hafidhahullaah)
Notes:
There occurs in a narration of Ibn Maajah (no. 195):
“The Messenger of Allah stood up among us and said five things. He said: ‘Allah does not sleep, and it is not befitting that He should sleep. He lowers the scales and raises them. The deeds done during the night are taken up to Him before the deeds done during the day, and the deeds of the day before the deeds of the night. His veil is light, and if He were to remove it, the glory of his Face would burn everything of His creation, as far as its gaze reaches.’“
These narrations establish for us the following:
- The hadeeth does not limit the names of Allaah to ninety nine, rather from the names of Allaah, there are ninety nine. Read here a fuller discussion: Ibn Uthaimeen: Names and Attributes
- Allaah is the Ever-Living and the attribute of life is established for Him.
- Sleep is negated from Allaah, as are all forms of deficiency. It does not befit the Majesty of Allaah that He should sleep, and He is not in need of it, for He is the Ever-Living, the Almighty. So sleep is a negated attribute.
- The deeds ascend to Him as He is the Most High (Al-`Aliyy), proving that He is above His creation.
- His Hijaab is fire, and in a narration it is light. The glory of His Face would burn whatever it reached of the creation.
