Is it allowed to wear a ring on the forefinger and middle finger? And is it allowed to abbreviate “salallāhu ʿalaihi wasallam” to “S” or “SAW”? Shaikh Al-Islam Ibn Bāz.

Question: What is the ruling of wearing a ring on the forefinger (index finger) or middle finger because we have heard that Allah’s Messenger (salallāhu ʿalaihi wasallam) prohibited it? And what is the ruling on the one who writes صلى الله عليه وسلم (i.e. “salallāhu ʿalaihi wasallam”) abbreviated to one letter ص (i.e. “S”) or to such as صلعم (i.e. “SAW”, “SAAS”, etc.)?

Shaikh Ibn Bāz (rahimahullāh) answered: “The Prophet (salallāhu ‘alaihi wasallam) forbade wearing rings on the middle finger and forefingers.1It was narrated that ʿAli (radiyallāhu ʿanhu) said: “The Messenger of Allah (salallāhu ʿalaihi wasallam) forbade me to wear a ring on this one and this one,” meaning the forefinger and middle finger. (An-Nasā’ī, 5211, graded saheeh by Al-Albāni) What is apparent, and Allāh knows best, that he intended by that the men. As for women, then they are allowed beautification of every type. So what seems apparent to us, and Allah knows best, is that the intent is men.

As for writing ص (or S) or صلعم (SAAW) in abbreviated for, then this is not proper, and the least that can be said is that it is hated. Indeed from the Sunnah is that one invokes blessings upon the Prophet and says: صلى الله عليه وسلم and that he writes it in full ― and due to that, Allah will write it as tenfold for him:

مَنْ صَلَّى عَلَىَّ وَاحِدَةً صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ عَشْرًا

“Whoever invokes Allah’s salutations of peace and blessings upon me once, Allah will send His peace and blessings upon him tenfold due to it.”2Muslim 408, An-Nasā’ī 1296, and others. So the Sunnah for the believer is that when he speaks he says “salallāhu ʿalaihi wasallam” whenever the Prophet is mentioned, may Allah extol him and His peace and blessings be upon him. And when his name is being written, he states “salallāhu ʿalaihi wasallam” when writing in books and treatises. O Allah, extol him, and send peace and blessings upon him.
