REQUEST: I have made this article freely available ― I request that you donate (if you are able) the amount of just £1, £2 (or more) as a Sadaqah to the Salafi Bookstore and Islamic Centre so they can print and distribute free leaflets and booklets to aid the da’wah of Ahlus-Sunnah and Hadīth across the world. If you are not able to donate, then please make du’ā to Allah that He continues to aid and strengthen this blessed da’wah.

All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all creation; may Allah extol the mention of our noble Prophet Muhammad in the highest company of Angels and give him peace and security―and his family, his Companions and all those who follow him correctly until the establishment of the Hour.

  1. Asalaamu Alaikum warahmatullah

Baarak Allahufeek. Is it allowed to cut off friends who have good religion, but bad character?

I have a close friend who is salafi walhamdulillah, however I’ve been pulling away from her due to her constant negativity. There is hardly ever a conversation we have except that she is complaining about everything from her husband, a minor ache or illness, the temperature in her home, something someone said, everything.

She constantly backbites her other friends and creates drama from nothing.

Even though she’s much older than me, I’m the one constantly trying to advise her. We’ve been friends for many years, however, I’ve grown to seriously resent her and no longer want to continue communicating. Her negativity never ends and is draining.

We live far apart from each other and only maintain contact through messaging and social media. I want to change my number as I’m tired of trying to help fix her never ending problems and stop her from backbiting; but I feel guilty because she’s my sister in Islam and I’ve known her for so long.

Is it allowed for me to cut off communication considering the fact that we’re not blood relatives?

    • Wa ‘alaikumus-salaam wa rahmatullaah,

Keep advising her, and inform her that if she does not change, you will need to distance yourself unless she improves her conduct.
